Why offer Higher Education for Diving?
Very simply the level and standard of theory education as taught by most training agencies have two serious limitations:
- The amount of time available for the actual course training
- The level of education is normally limited to the minimum required for certification by the agency for the level
Many divers feel that they would greatly benefit by learning and understanding more about diving theory and we feel, as some major agencies also feel, that more knowledge and experience will make much safer diving. As our education programs are designed to work with diving training agencies standards and International standards requirements.
The biggest single benefit to divers having better education and a greater understanding of diving theory means simply a much better understanding of all of the risks in involved in being a diver at any level.
As the physics and physiology involved in diving affect all levels in the same way... It does not matter to the laws of physics as applied to diving, if you are a beginner or a technical diver. Other benefits include: Greater Confidence that comes with more knowledge, plus safer diving practices as you will better understand the risks involved, and save money on higher training levels as some agencies will accept our certificate theory to Dive Leadership and entry level instructor levels. Prior learning credits maybe applied see: Prior Learning Credits Page
About our Certificate in Diving
The program includes our unique "Flexible Study Option", which means you can finish the certificate early or take longer, upto six (6) months to complete the program. You may also choose which modules and units you complete in any order, you MUST complete a minimum of 120 hours of study time, plus complete assignments for each unit, and quizzes for modules, plus a final 3 hour exam. Which can also be flexible with online or attending a class exam. For fuller details of the whole program see the .PDF download below.
Certification in Diving INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
The Certificate level will cover: Diving Physics, Diving Physiology, Equipment, Types of Diving, Diving Operations, Resort Safety Management, Decompression Theory, Nitrox Diving Theory, Dive Planning and Organisation, Navigation, Assisting Instructional programs, Leading Dives and Specialist Diving Activities (4 Specialist Certifications Minimum) Plus Advanced Rescue. CRP First Aid, Oxygen Administration and Introduction to Hyperbarics.
At the end of this course, graduates will Be “Certififed” as Advanced Divers (Professional Buddies and Dive Guides for Certified Divers Only) by way of a dual process; they will receive an Academic Qualification and a Diving Skills Assessment and Evaluation for Final certification requiring a minimum number of experience dives (50) and a minimum number of Instructional/Training Dives (20) prior to certification. Standards will be to International Level and the program will set a new higher standard than currently required for the majority of training agencies advanced diving industry level certification.
The certificate in diving will also be useful in upgrading to dive leadership levels as all of the theory will have been covered and tested. Plus membership of the ITDA Group Professional body at “Associate Level”, will be included.

Credits Benefit for Prior Certification and Experience
The maximum prior credit for this level is 3 Credits, the Certificate program requires 30 Credits as our academic requirement and and 85% pass rate for practical skills.
This curricullum is academic, as the most important missing element in fast track training is the time limitation for study during a practical course. the practical skills and abilitites required for certification at this level, may be obtained under our prior learning credits system. See: Prior Credits Information link. The minimum study time will be 1 semester but two are highly reccommended.
To successfully complete this course, you will need as outlined below the current bulleted list of required materials, including textbooks, manuals as downloads. Or use our online E-Learning registration.
- Certificate in Diving Course Manual/Workbook
- Applied Physics and Physiology in Diving e-learning presentations and quizzes
- Dive Equipment, Environment, Navigation and Consrvation e-learning presentations and quizzes
- Dive Planning and Emergency Planning e-learning presentations and quizzes
- IHMP ITDA CPR First Aid and Dive Accident Management Manual/Workbook
Programs and Modules are available to support lectures for tutors/teachers/Instructors for classroom studies or Distance Learning Programs are currently available.
The schedule for the minimum of one (1) but highly recommend two (2) semesters is to be determined by the various, schools, colleges, community colleges and Universities that are operating the course programs. In many cases even three (3) semesters maybe taken. On-line support is avialble directly from the International College of Diving. Assignments are set for each learning unit and modules. With Quizzes included in each module. Plus a final exam / assessment. With our distance learning and e-learning programs a tutor is assigned to help students via email.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Educational establishments will of course have their own rules and procedures but all course materials MUST meet International Diving College (ICoD)Ltd. standards and those invovled directly with educating and assessing academic skills i.e. teachers, Lecturers and qualified instructors must be authorised and approved by the ICoD Educational Assessment Board…
General grading of acacdemic skills will be pre-set by standards as set out in our workbook, in addition educators/tutors will have standarised tests and quizzes at their disposal for module assessments and grading… Plus a degree of educator/tutor input will be accepted based on their level of training and experience in diving as appropriate…
Scales for grading will be based on 1-5 (5=A, 4=B,3=C, 2=D, and 1=F… Plus and Minus may also be used as an incentive system and distintction may also be given on any required project work and module assignments and also on final marks.
We can also train and certify lecturers/tutors or teachers who wish to undergo our unique Academic Diving Assessment Program or who have prior experience in diving.
